D220 BOE Candidate Response - Sandra Ficke-Bradford

Current D220 School Board of Education President, Sandra Ficke-Bradford, responded to the questionnaire proposed by our community members. Her response is provided below in its entirety.

Thank you, Kiley and SEEN group.  Congratulations on the launch of your advocacy group.

Please find below my response:

Thank you for the opportunity to address special education.

I have consistently represented and advocated for special education learners as both a parent and a school board member.  I also engage and participate in various special education events in the Northwest Chicagoland area.

As a parent, I understand first-hand the difficulty of traversing an IEP meeting.  I sought out advocacy, resources and support to understand and enable my children.

As a board member, I advocated for facility and program enhancements. For example, I was one of the first to discuss twice-exceptional students at the board table.  I also advocated for the purchase of facilities for the Barrington Transition Program and supported renovating the facility in preparation for an enrollment increase.

When implementing special education programs in the district, the board must monitor and consider all legal requirements for students and staffing.

As a board, our objective must be to provide the most effective learning environment for special education students taking into account the individual needs of students and families while ensuring their privacy.

I fully support the new Special Education - Parent Advisory Council introduced by Dr Winkelman, D220 Superintendent, at the most recent board meeting.

I believe this will provide an excellent opportunity for parents and families of special education students to actively collaborate with the board and administration on best practices for their children.  Further information will be presented at a board meeting this May.

Thanks again,

Sandra Ficke-Bradford

Candidate for Barrington 220 School Board
